John VIII was the son of Manouel II Palaiologos and the Serbian princess Helena Dragaš, and became emperor upon his father's death in 1425. His reign was marked by the desperate attempts to stem the loss of lands to the rising Ottoman Empire, the Council of Ferrara-Florence, which attempted unsuccessfully to reunite the Orthodox and Catholic Churches, and an increasingly colapsing monetary economy. As such, John was forced to effectively go on a begging tour of the courts of Europe. Because of this, however, John is one of the most portrayed Byzantine Emperors in art, including manuscript miniatures, paintings, engravings and the famous medallion of Pisanello, of which the Barber holds a cast copy. Despite several marriages, John had no children, leaving the throne to his brother, Constantine XI, the last Romano-Byzantine emperor, on his death in 1448. |
