Robert Carfrae was the son of a jeweller and silversmith in Edinburgh, who became curator of the Museum of Antiquities in Edinburgh (now part of the National Museum of Scotland) in 1866. He ammassed a large collection of coins which were eventually split up and auctioned off. The Barber's portion of his collection came as part of Geoffrey Haines's collection, who did not buy them directly (Haines being 2 years old at the time of Carfrae's death), but was gifted them by Percy H. Webb, who had in turn bought them from a sale of Sir Hermann Weber's collection, who had bought them from the sales of Carfrae's collection. |
