Leopold Vierordt's coin collection was sold of by J. Schulman in Amsterdam in 1823. It was clearly sizeable and portions of it are known across numerous public and private collections. Our knowledge of him has been pieced together from Dutch and German geneological archives. It has been assumed that the coin collection sold by Schulman belonged to the younger Leopold Vierordt, not his father, also Leopold Vierordt, who died and was buried in Karlsruhe in 1906, because the younger Leopold appears in censuses for Amsterdam in 1900, though I have been unable to find evidence of his death in or near Bloemendaal (near Haarlem) around the year 1923, as claimed in the Schulman sale. |
