The Byzantine empress known as Maria of Alania was born Princess Martha of Georgia. She was married to the Emperor Michael VII, by whom she had a son, Constantine. When Michael was deposed in 1078, she was then married to her former husband's usurper, Nikephoros III, but her son, Constantine was also allowed to remain with her in the palace and was still considered a potential future emperor. Her beauty, intelligence and character are almost always praised in sources which refer to her. |
