al-Mahdi became Caliph peacefully upon the death of his father al-Mansur in 158 AH (775 AD). His reign was noted for his attempts to root out syncretic Islam, which was particularly prevalent in the eastern regions of the Caliphate. He also oversaw the beginnings of the blossoming of Baghdad as one of the most important cities of the Middle Ages. He was poisonned by one of his wives in 169 AH (785 AD). |
