Obverse: The Virgin, facing, nimbate, seated on a throne, holding the Christ child in centre. Pellet border around the Virgin. Inscription to either side of the nimbus.
Reverse: The empress standing to front, wearing a high crown with prependoulia and loros. jeweled trefoil scepter in left hand. Inscription in two columns either side of figure. Pellet border around figure and inscription.
Inscriptions / Translations: Obverse: MP ΘV (Mother of God).
Reverse: ΘE/Oδω/PA EV/CEBE/THAT / AVΓȣ/TA Δȣ/KAI/NA H / ΠAΛA/OΛO/ΓIN… (Theodora Doukaina Palaiologina, most pious Empress).
Notes: Struck below centre, string course aligned vertically from centre. Incredibly fine specimen.
