Blazer with long sleeves, pockets and lapels. Dark blue with blue, red and gold stripes. The University of Birmingham crest is stitched on the breast pocket. Black buttons down the front.

Notes:  This is a 1940s University of Birmingham blazer. Its colours are inspired by those of the University, which are in turn borrowed from the City of Birmingham. The University crest is stitched onto the breast pocket. The crest borrows large elements from that of the former Mason Science College, as both the Mermaid and the Lion rampant with two heads are seen in this shield. In heraldry the Mermaid is mostly represented, as in the University of Birmingham shield, holding a comb and mirror. The Lion rampant with two heads was first granted to the coat of arms of Mason of Greenwich in 1739 and was adopted later by Mason Science College. The book in the bottom section features the University of Birmingham's motto 'per ardua ad alta' which translates roughly as 'through difficulties to the heights'.
