This wooden carved head piece represents an Oba on horseback, wearing the beaded dress of the Ogboni society and accompanied by retainers.
Notes: Oba is a Yoruba river goddess and was the only legitimate wife of Shango, the god of lightning. The carver of this piece, George Bandele, was Father Kevin Carroll's chief carver and a famous sculptor of Opin. It was collected in 1952 and was lent to the Danford Collection by J.Danford in 1964. It was purchased in 1975.
