A potentiometer is an instrument for comparing potential differences. In its simplest form a current is passed through a wire and the p.d. to be measured is balanced against that along a length of the wire, using a galvanometer to show when the p.d.s are equal. The accuracy is limited by the length and uniformity of the wire. In the present instrument the length of the wire, seen in the front of the photo, is effectively increased 20 times by adding sections that are selected by the upper wiper contact seen in the photo.
