Made of brown leather the blotter is decorated with astrological symbols relating to the writer’s horoscope, and label inside states that the blotter was given as a gift to Galsworthy by his wife Ada. Inside the blotter a loop of leather contains a calligraphy pen with a black handle and a gold nib, which is inscribed with the letter ‘J’. The blotter has two separate compartments which are each filled with documents.

Notes:  Special Collections catalogue details it as 'JG's leather writing folder'. Blotter contains the following: An empty envelope labeled ‘Original Pencil Version of “Scatter my Ashes” with a note saying ‘to go with my will’, Women’s City Club Magazine extract containing a Galsworthy article, typed (draft?) of Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize speech to be given at Stockholm Banquet, 1 page of typed text titled ‘Address at Stockholm on the Occasion of the Nobel Prize’, 2 typed poems on 1 sheet of paper titled ‘Of Wagtails’ and ‘Of Larks’, empty envelope labeled ‘The Donkeys of Africa. Speech for Dedication of the Conrad Memorial (inaugurated by John Galsworthy)’, typed poem titled ‘Of Sphyxes’, written list of items in the blotter (note- some have obviously been removed and there are also additions which are not listed), handwritten notes about potato production in the UK, 7 pages joined together of a play titled ‘Reputation’, 2 pages of penciled with ‘Poems’ and ‘New Poems’, 4 pages of typed text joined together titled ‘For Better Understanding’ , letter from ‘The Sphinx’ magazine from University of Liverpool, with a handwritten poem on the back, 11 photocopied poems joined together, 1 page of handwritten text, titled ‘The Mandarians. . .’, 3 joined together pages titled ‘Speech for Conrad Memorial’, 12 joined together pages titled ‘Fifty Club, Cardiff, 35th Session, 1930-1931, 26th January 1931’, handwritten version of ‘Scatter Ashes!’, 5 joined together pages of ‘Preface’, typed poem titled ‘Spring’, typed poem titled ‘Bury Hill’- there are two copies of this, typed poem titled ‘Starshine’, 4 clipped together pages titled ‘Unkind Reflections on Forming One’s Style’, typed poem ‘England to free men’, typed poem ‘Peace in the World’, typed poem ‘A supplication for Gentleness to all Creatures’, typed poem ‘Lines on a family photograph’, red/brown fabric pouch with a silk insert (empty), typed poem ‘To Chopin at Valdemosa’, typed poem ‘A.P.H and Mr. Mansfield of Truro’, typed poem ‘The Pass of the Song’, 6 joined together pieces of ‘Starshine’- various versions, ‘Chapter XVI’ of an unidentified piece of work, John Galsworthy’s coat of arm on a piece of paper, ‘designed by R.H.S and approved by the College of Arms’, photograph of Coombe Warren House, 1 sheet of paper titled ‘Translator’s Forward’, typed description of astrological design on the cover of the blotter, envelope containing 4 ‘Memorial Cards’ for Galsworthy, family tree of characters in the Forsyte Saga, Clipping of ‘The Weekend Review’ with Galsworthy’s ‘Never Get Out!’ poem printed in it, dated April 26th 1930, handwritten copy of ‘The Native Star’, envelope containing Galsworthy’s horoscope completed by Mrs. Warwick Deeping (?), sheet with 5 handwritten poems on it, Typed memo titled referring to M.S.S paper and Galsworthy, handwritten notes of Galsworthy’s favourite books, poets, actors etc.- now covered with plastic, Blotting board (?) covered with plastic, with scratches and notes in ink on it, label for Galsworthy’s blotter, stating that it was presented to him by Ada Galsworthy.
