This piece has been woven on men's double-heddle narrow loom. It is made from fourteen strips (10 cm in width), with the warp-striped in fawn and natural machine-spun cotton with white rayon weft-faced supplementary patterns, spelling out 'Nigeria Independence October 1960', the date on which Nigeria gained independence from Britain and the chance to establish its own parliamentary government.

Notes:  Cloth produced to commemorate Nigerian independence, made by prisoners at the Federal Prison, Zaria, Kaduna State. The collector had been involved in delivering teaching for the community development office in Zaria and had been presented with the cloth after this project.
