Artist / Maker:  Greek
Title / Object name:  Head of a woman
Object type:  Sculpture
Culture:  Greek
Date made:  about 445 BC
Materials:  Marble
Measurements:  21.1 x 20 x 13 cm head only; 29 x 27 x 19 cm with base
Provenance:  Known to have been in the collection of Alphonse Kahn, Paris, Royal Academy Exhibition of Greek Art, 1946, cat. no. 157, anonymous lender (possibly Alphonse Kahn); purchased from K.J. Hewett Ltd., London, August 1961, for £2,000

This sculpture was perhaps carved in about 445 BC and since detached from a relief. This may have been a high relief, or the pediment of a small building. The woman's hair appears to be plaited high across her forehead, although losses and abrasion have obscured and worn away lots of the carved detail.
