This scene was painted on the spot and it is dated the 11th October, 1895. Boudin was born nearby on the Normandy coast and he painted its beaches and harbours throughout his career. This is a more solitary scene than many, with a single distant fisherwoman under a typically lively and spacious sky.

Boudin taught and inspired Monet in the 1860s. His resolve to paint what he called ‘the simple beauties of nature ... in all its variety, its freshness’ anticipated the aims of the Impressionists.
