The corset became a symbol for the restrictions placed on women’s lives and bodies for early 20th-century feminists. Sloan saw working-class girls as a healthy, vivacious presence in the city and sets their curious, energetic amusement and free, agile bodies against the stiff pretensions of the wealthy, corseted woman. |
