This painting is an inscribed replica of an original version which hangs in the Carlton Club, St. James. Here we see a three quarter length image of Chamberlain, dressed formerly and holding a small slip of paper. Neville Chamberlain was the Prime Minister of Britain between the years 1937 and 1940 and was suceeded by Winston Churchill, after Germany invaded the Netherlands, Belgium and France. However his political career began when in 1915 he was elected Lord Mayor of Birmingham. Sir James Gunn was a Glaswegian born painter who later moved to Paris where he became an established portrait painter.
