Profile portrait of Blanche Bartleet Bailey, the mother of playwright John Galsworthy. She was twenty five when she married John's father (also called John) and came from Worcestershire. She was very much involved in the running of the household, in this case the large house that John's father had bought for the family, Coombe Warren. This painting was bequeathed to the University of Birmingham by Rudolph Sauter in 1977. Rudolf was the son of artist George Sauter and the nephew of John Galsworthy. During his life time he exhibited two one man shows in New York and London.
