In the summer of 1876, Manet stayed with the collector, Ernest Hoschedé, on his estate at Montgeron near Paris. Nearby lived the fashionable portraitist, Émile Auguste Carolus-Duran (1838-1917), an old friend. The two artists began portraits of each other, neither of which was finished. Here Manet successfully captures the swaggering nonchalance of his friend. It seems likely, however, that much of the landscape was brushed in later.
