Head and shoulders portrait, formally dressed and seated at a three quarters angle. Dr John Tomlinson Ingleby was a surgeon of Queen's College Birmingham, and was the first specialist at Birmingham in Obstetric Medicine. He was elected a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and following his death in 1845, the University of Birmingham established the Ingleby Lectures in 1876 to promote Obstetric Medicine.This painting was presented to the University by Professor Gilbert Barling in 1905. There is also a portrait of Professor Barling by George Fiddes Watt in the University's Collections (A0030).
