From about 1888 Toulouse-Lautrec began to illustrate the theatre, music-halls, cafés and low life of Paris, and his paintings came under the influence of Degas. The present picture was executed in the Montmartre garden of M. Forest in 1890, and is typical in size and medium of his work at the time. The sitter, perhaps a professional model, appears in other works of this period by the artist.
