This half length portrait has been posed facing the viewer, the subject dressed in vice-chancellor's robes. H.F. Humphreys was vice-chancellor of Birmingham University from 1949 until his death in 1953. Previous to his appointment as vice-chancellor he had been a professor in Birmingham University's Dental School. This particular portrait thereofore is a posthumous image of the sitter. The artist Waldron West was an assistant to the Welsh artist and designer Frank Brangwyn and his work can also be seen in Sandwell and Worcester City Museums.
