Three quarter length pose gazing into the distance. Frankland replaced Henry Tilden (first Professor of Chemistry at the new Birmingham University) in 1894, having been Professor of Chemistry at University College Dundee since 1888. He was the son of the noted chemist Edward Frankland, a leading figure in the field of organometallic chemistry.
Bernard Munns was a Birmingham born artist who exhibited in London and Paris. This painting was commissioned by the University of Birmingham.
