Three quarter length seated portrait, the sitter turning to his left to face the viewer. He is wearing the Chancellor's robes coloured black with a gold trim and gold embelishment on the arms, with his hands crossed over his lap. Sitting in frount of a dark background.
Sir Alex Jarrett was Chancellor of the University of Birmingham from 1983 until 2002, suceeding Sir Peter Scott. During this time he chaired a Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals studying higher education policy, which resulted in the highly influential 'Jarratt Report'. He was a prominent industrialist and businessman, and after beginning his career in the civil service in 1949 he went on to become Chairman of the publishing company Reed International.
Norman Hepple (1908-1994), was a London born artist and the son of painter Robert Hepple.
