This vessel would have been used as a container for carrying the Eucharistic wafer to the sick, during the Christian ritual of the Holy Communion. This is the most important religious service in the Christian church, in which people share bread/wafers and wine as a symbol of the Last Supper and the death of Christ. The cross at the top of this object was probably added in the 14th century.
