This rapid watercolour sketch was most likely completed on the spot. In sharp contrast to Cox’s pastoral works, human life is completely absent within this desolate landscape. He frequently portrayed the mountains of North Wales throughout his career, and increasingly used ‘Scotch paper’, a type of wrapping paper, during his later years. The irregular, rough texture was perfect for this type of scene, which depicts the wild and untamed side of nature.
Inscriptions / Translations: Inscribed in ink on verso 'Snowdon, 22 July 1853', '2925 316' and two sets of measurements.
