Bonvin came from a family of painters of humble origin and was largely self-taught. He specialised in scenes of domestic life and in still-lifes and was much influenced by comparable works by his eighteenth-century predecessor, Chardin. In this picture, which dates from c. 1880, he portrays the attributes of the painter, among them a palette and brushes, a portfolio of drawings and tubes of paint. The painting is one of a number of works Bonvin executed in the 1870s and ’80s.
