Vuillard was among the younger artists, including Pierre Bonnard (1867 - 1947) and Maurice Denis (1870 - 1943), who embraced lithography, unlike some of the older generation such as Renoir who found the technique difficult. This work relates to Vuillard’s paintings from the period and further develops their innovative techniques. For example, the dressmaker’s neck is indicated by the blank, untouched paper. The lithograph was published as one of the frontispieces to Paris’s leading avant-garde journal ‘La Revue blanche’ in January 1894.
