Magritte was one of the leading figures of the Surrealist movement, which he joined in 1925. This picture, also known as The taste of sorrow, is typical of his depiction of enigmatic subject matter in a style of disturbing visual clarity. The poetic image of tobacco plants, whose leaves transform themselves into birds, recurs constantly in the artist's works. On the reverse the painting is dated 1948, as is an almost identical replica in the Musée d'Art Moderne, Brussels.
