Depicting one of the most popular scenes in Christian art, the grand architectural elements that engulf the subjects in this print are an exercise in perspective and foreshortening. The dove of the Holy Spirit illuminates Mary’s face, while God the Father hovers in the distant clouds. The vase of lilies symbolizes purity, whereas Judith with the head of Holofernes calls to mind Mary’s victory over the Devil, who, with the head of a badger, is chained underneath the stairs.
