This scene presents the marriage between Mary and Joseph, performed by the High Priest. The subject is illustrated with contemporary detail, such as the wedding guests’ attire and the classicized architecture of the Temple. At the top of the frame, a large owl, emblem of night, unfold his wings. In the sculptural ornaments of the arch, nude men on unicorns fend off wild women on lions, perhaps symbolising the repulse of lust by chastity.
