This woodcut was one of a series originally published as The Apocalypse of St John in 1498. Dürer’s cycle of illustrations made him famous throughout Europe. Here St John the Apostle kneels before a vision of the Son of Man representing the path to a supernatural realm. The scene is from Revelations (I, 12-16), the final book of the New Testament, describing a vision of the second coming of Christ: ‘…I saw seven golden candlesticks;/ And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of Man…/ And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword...’.
