Artist / Maker:  Veronese, Paolo Caliari (1528-1588)
Title / Object name:  The Visitation
Object type:  Painting
Place made:  Venice
Culture:  Italian
Date made:  1577
Materials:  Oil on canvas
Measurements:  277.5 x 156 cm
Provenance:  Painted for the Church of S. Giacomo, Murano; purchased by Sir James Wright between 1765 and 1767; Lord Clive, 1771; by descent Earl of Powis; purchased from Agnew in 1953.

The Virgin, in the centre, greets her elderly cousin Elizabeth with news of the impending birth of Christ. After a long barren life, Elizabeth is also miraculously pregnant, with John the Baptist. Veronese locates the meeting in front of a palace. The observers wear contemporary clothes which show off the artist’s skills as a colourist.

The painting was one of six made for a church on the island of Murano, in Venice. It was originally hung higher so we look up towards the holy scene.

Notes:  Exhibited: British Institution, London, 1843, no. 116; 'Thirty-Nine Masterpieces of Venetian Painting', Thomas Agnew & Sons, London, 1953, no. 39; Edinburgh Festival, 1954.
