This piece has been carved in a light coloured wood with a leopard between the horns. The horns themselves are separate units fitting into sockets on the top of the mask. Although this mask is a tourist piece, Ekpo society which exists within Ibibio culture places emphasis on the use of masks in ritual practises. The two main types of mask used are 'mfon' and 'idiok', which are for use in the day and at night respectively and represent the good and bad characteristics of humanity. It was lent to the Danford Collection by H.A. Lidderdale in 1968 and was acquired by bequest in 1992.
