Handwritten. Thompson thanks Yapp for his letter, particularly for his kind reference to the reason why Thompson disposed of is continental herbarium at the present time (financial reasons). Thompson apologises that this has disappointed Yapp far more than he was expecting and says that he now knows of Yapp's Botanical Department now having the facilities to look after the herbarium due to a move and a new member of staff. Thompson says that he should have spoken about what was in his mind a few weeks ago before definitely offering the collection to Cardiff. Had he known of the new botanical department at Birmingham sooner, also knowing that Birmingham as a city has far greater wealth than Cardiff, he would have asked if Birmingham had wanted to buy the collection ('buy' is underlined). Thompson says that he is only getting £25 for it. The first 'very low' (underlined) £30 offer was reduced because Cardiff had very little money to spend. Says he should have asked one of his cousins to buy the collection and given it to the museum, as they were hugely interested. Thompson says that the least he can do is to give Yapp all of the duplicates that Hyde does not want. Thompson says that so far as his present arrangements are concerned, he intends to leave his British collection, as originally planned, to Birmingham University and his will has not been touched. On the second piece of paper there is a 'P.S.' note. |
