Handwritten. Thompson writes that a few years ago he had said that his British and Continental Herbaria were left under his will to Birmingham University. Thompson says that these days he is always short of money and space, and so regrets to inform Yapp that the Continental collection is about to be sold to the National Museum of Wales, whose Botany Department have long wanted it, despite it being "willed to Birmingham University". 'He' came over to see it last Tuesday and the Council have now confirmed the proposed purchase. Apologises if this will be a disappointment to Yapp. Thompson has become increasingly interested in the Museum of Cardiff and has a family connection with it and says that he has realised that outside of Oxford and Cambridge, there are few English universities where herbaria are much (underlined) used, and that the use would be far less than at a large National Museum. Thompson writes that his Continental herbarium is far smaller than it would have been had he not sold many specimens before the war, and given away many since, so now there are perhaps not more than 4600 sheets, not all mounted. He asked for an 'extremely low' (underlined) price, because he knew that Cardiff's funds are strictly limited at present. |
