BIRBI-2017.3.jpg

An engineer by training, Gabo here uses materials that were new at the time, such as Perspex, to create an illusion of a continuous curving form - and a work of ethereal beauty. This is the first sculpture in which he used stringing and nylon filament as a means of defining space and creating movement. The Russian-born artist made it when he was living in St Ives, Cornwall. Always at the forefront of avant-garde art, Gabo sought to produce objects that 'appeal more to our minds and our feelings than to our crude physical senses'. This work was probably modelled on a prototype made for an unrealised public sculpture to be sited near a textile factory, in celebration of skilled workers harnessing modern industrial technology.
