Lucas, A. 1962. Ancient Egyptian Materials and Industries, 4th ed., rev. J. R. Harris (London: Edward Arnold and Mineola, New York).

Notes:  Basalt was a widespread stone in ancient Egypt, however only one ancient quarry is known from the northern Fayum (Aston et al. 2000: 23-24). The use of this stone for vessels can be traced back to the Predynastic period until around the 6th Dynasty (Lucas 1962: 65). Basalt was also particularly used for statuary within the Late and Greco-Roman period.
