Carved from a solid block in light-coloured softwood with interlacing latticework legs on an annular base. 'Chip-carved' medallion-form motifs are carved at the intersections, the top forming a circular seat decorated with knife-cut Yoruba patterns.
The carver, Bamgboye, produced a vast range of both domestic and ceremonial items, including masks. Originally from the Ekiti region, he was Chief Alago of Owo-Oda and is recognised as one of the Yoruba master carvers of the 20th century.
Notes: This item was bequested to the University of Birmingham in 1972 by E.H. Duckworth. Teacher, scientist and photographer Edward Harland Duckworth was recommended to the post of Inspector of Education in Nigeria in 1930 following the commendation of his teaching work in Cheltenham. During his time in Nigeria he taught science, developed teaching methods and was elected as editor of Nigeria Magazine, adding his own photographs to articles.
