This is a machine used in telegraphy to record electrical pulses on paper tape. The 1 inch wide tape is driven by a clockwork mechanism powered by a weight on a chain that hangs below the instrument (not visible in images). This mechanism is wound by a key (missing) that fits the square peg on the front. Two signals can be recorded simultaneously by pens that dip in an ink reservoir and touch the tape. Each pen is driven transversely across the tape by the action of a pair of solenoids pulling on an iron plate (image b).
