Photograph of the Menchum Falls, Cameroon.
The Menchum River in Cameroon forms one of several tributaries for the River Benue in Nigeria. The river forms a drainage system for the Oku Kom highlands and the area along the river has encouraged farming due to the rich volcanic nature of the soil. The waterfall is a popular tourist attraction although the safety of the site and access to it have been a longstanding source of problems.
Teacher, scientist and photographer Edward Harland Duckworth was recommended to the post of Inspector of Education in Nigeria in 1930 following the commendation of his teaching work in Cheltenham. During his time in Nigeria he taught science, developed teaching methods and was elected as editor of Nigeria Magazine, adding his own photographs to articles.
