For grinding food. Commonly found in groups on flat areas of rocky hills to which people fled in times of strife. Notes: Pounding or grinding stones are not uncommon in parts of Nigeria. They were used for grinding food and most were usd over a long period of time. They usually occur in groups on fairly horizontal rock outcrops on inselbergs or other hills that were defensive positions in times of strife. Some were used until late in the nineteenth century or even later. |
