A parallel plate capacitor consists of two conducting plates separated by a gap. Its capacitance depends on the area of the plates, the width of the gap and the material filling the gap. In this case the gap can be varied by coarse and fine lead screws with calibrated scales. The instrument was in use in undergraduate teaching laboratories at least between 1960s and 1980s.
