BIRRC-D0348.jpg

This piece has been woven on a single-heddle upright loom. Traditionally Nupe textiles are plain, employing only a narrow range of patterns. The red and white striped motif is typical of men's gowns and is traditionally called 'giwa'. The range of colours used here includes red yarn with blue, black, green and yellow warp stripes. The weft-float supplementary patterns and stripes are in white, black, blue, orange and green.
