Photograph of wooden carved crib figure, sculpted by Lamidi Fakeye.

Lamidi Fakeye was a Nigerian wood carver, one in a long family line of such craftsmen. He was apprencticed to the carver Bandele and throughout his professional life exhibited both in Nigeria and abroad. One of his most noted commissions was the carving of the doors for the Kennedy Centre's African Room, the panels depicting the village the artist grew up in. The figure in this photograph is similar to the Fakeye equestrian figure in the Danford Collection of West African Art and Artefacts (BIRRC-D0023).

Teacher, scientist and photographer Edward Harland Duckworth was recommended to the post of Inspector of Education in Nigeria in 1930 following the commendation of his teaching work in Cheltenham. During his time in Nigeria he taught science, developed teaching methods and was elected as editor of Nigeria Magazine, adding his own photographs to articles.
