Air blowing past the small fan blades causes the fan to turn. Its revolutions are counted and displayed on the dials. The small dials read ten thousands, thousands and hundreds, with the large dial reading from 0 to 100. The calibration is in terms of the distance in feet by which air has passed through the fan. Airflow speeds in feet per second can be determined by measuring the change in reading of the dials over a known time interval.
