This is a device for making and breaking an electrical circuit at a specific frequency. The steel reed is maintained in vibration by an electromagnet driven via a contact on the reed; the action is that of a buzzer. When the reed vibrates it makes contacts at the extremities of its motion in each direction. These are nicely made contactors with small springs so that they do not have too large an effect on the motion. The instrument was presumably used in telegraphy.
