'Tourist art'. Provenance unknown. Donor unknown, possibly E.H. Duckworth 1972.

The provenance of this mask is unknown, but the slits underneath the eyes suggest it was made to be worn. Traditionally masks are important among many African cultures and are often worn during festivals and celebrations. Masks have a variety of uses and in some cultures the wearing of them for the completion of rituals and tasks is seen as a rite of passage.
