Large Middle Corinthian alabastron of buff clay with red and black paint and incised details. A large ‘shield’ device dominates the body of the vessel, flanked by half-rosettes. Between each half-rosette is a swan. All around are smaller rosettes and flowers. Segmented rosettes in black paint on the lip, neck and base. Use of red and black paint. Colour:paint 5YR 3/1 (very dark grey), 10R 3/3 (dusky red), fabric 10YR 6/3 (pale brown). Labelled on underside Rhodes 1900, so was purchased with X0678 and others.Complete and in fair condition, with some chipping to the rim. Severe surface wear and paint loss, especially towards the base. This piece was given to the University of Birmingham by Archdeacon Hopkinson.
