The object consists of a light brown wooden box with a small cream label on the front reading 'A.Frank Optician Eletrician Deansgate Manchester Anuat 143 Lord St.Southport'. There is a small crank on the front of the box, the wooden handle of which has come completely loose from the metal fixture, however turning the crank still operates the mechanism inside. Both sides of the box have metal protursions with small holes and the right side also has a screw connecting to the apparatus on the inisde of the box. The underside of the lid has an affixed label with the object title and details of how to use the apparatus. Most of the mechanism is still affixed to the interior of the box, although 2 sets of wires and handles are now loose (only one set of these wires may be original to the object).

This device was used from the mid 19th century until the early 20th century as a 'cure' for a variety of physical and nervous disorders through electric shock treatment. At the time it was berll to believed beneficial to send electric currents through the body - an example of 'quack medicine'.
