Attic red-figure squat pelike of orange-red clay. Tongue pattern base line, which does not extend all around the body of the vessel to create a field. Side A: a young man, wrapped in a himation and wearing a long chiton, faces L. Side B: two women conversing. The taller one (L) holds out a length of cloth to her smaller companion (R). Both women wear chitons and bordered himatia; their hair is bound in a snood. The subject-matter may be connected with preparations for a wedding. Colour: paint 7.5YR 3/2 (dark brown), 10YR 3/2 (very dark greyish brown), fabric 2.5YR 6/8 (light red). Complete and in good condition; some wear to rim and handles. ARV 744.43; identified as the work of The Washing Painter. On loan from Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery.
