Three quarter length standing portrait. Charles Lapworth was the first professor of Geology at Mason College (Birmingham University's predecessor) between 1881 and 1913, and gave his name to the Lapworth Museum of Geology. He carried out groundbreaking work in his field, and recieved a Gold Medal from the Royal Society in 1891. Bernard Munns was a Birmingham based painter who exhibited in London and Paris. His work is represented in Cheltenham Art Gallery by his painting of the composer Gustav Holst. This painting was commissioned by the University of Birmingham.
